Pointing out the important differences between my online writing group and writing groups in classrooms, I get worried. I almost hear myself saying the unsayable: we're wasting our time trying to get such results out of our classroom groups. Can that be? Is the classroom such a contrived environment that it's inhospitable to all the love and care in response that I have enjoyed and that I want for my students? Well, it is contrived. I face that. Classrooms the same as friendships. And then I set about trying to find the ways in which they be, points at which lessons from one kind of writing group transfer to the other.

Two and a half years ago I joined an online writing group. I’d been spending hours surfing the Internet, dreaming of when my writing would be published. But I wasn’t submitting what I wrote. That changed when I joined the group. Like me, the other members were busy moms. But unlike me they were actually submitting to magazines. The group motivation and support kicked me into gear. Since then, I’ve published articles in a dozen regional parenting magazines and received awards for two of my essays.
